Mary Faux Jackson studied illustration for the National Diploma in Design at Brighton College of Art from 1958-61, becoming particularly interested and involved in printmaking, for which she has won several prizes. She continued to work at the College (which became Brighton Polytechnic and subsequently part of Brighton University), using the printmaking facilities and gaining certificates in art and design and in printmaking.

A lithograph exhibited in Brighton was voted “best in show” and bought by East Sussex County Council art adviser for the Brighton Schools Picture Library. Mary has also been accepted on two occasions by the Royal Academy for the Summer Exhibition.

Mary lives and works in Sussex at her studio gallery in Hurstpierpoint. Her country surroundings are reflected in her work – rural scenes observed with sympathy and understanding, and much time is spent in France following similar themes.

As an established Sussex artist, Mary is a member of the Ditchling Handworkers Guild as well as the Association of Sussex Artists, and exhibits widely through the county and in France with her work featuring in private collections both here and abroad.

Although she has been a printmaker throughout her career, Mary used to paint only when on holiday with the family, but in recent years she has taken her painting more seriously. She has taken several courses both in France and here at Sussex University, and now feels as at home with paint as with printing inks.
